Hello, my name is Marty. I’m an engineer who loves tinkering, building things and solving problems.
I’m here because I’m passionate about helping model makers, prop builders and cosplayers bring their props to life with electronics or mechanics!
I love making props but I know the desire to have a prop or costume light up, move or function as it appeared on screen or as you imagined it.
That’s why I built this site – to help you learn how to add special touches to your creations, such as:
- Lights and LEDs
- Counters
- Sound effects
- Movement
- Smoke effects
- Everything at once!
Imagine the feeling of building a wand that lights up, a blaster that fires, or a droid that rolls along with you!
I’m often frustrated that replica props are static and don’t provide the sensation of holding a ‘real’ object. Information on how to make them better is scattered across the internet and it’s hard to know where to start.
So I decided to write better instructions, linking the stepping stones to actual small projects that people can build and learn the skills required to take their props and costumes to the next level. These small successes helped motivate me to build-in more features and create better, more immersive objects.
It hasn’t always been easy. I never studied electronics, and the topic can be easily overwhelming. It can be frustrating when all you want is something that seems like it should be simple in our digital age – like a flashing light – but suddenly you’re dealing with coding microprocessors and installing new applications on your computer.
I’ve tried to break things down into bite-sized chunks of easy-to-digest material that’s fun and leads to solutions. I always strive to use straightforward solutions first. I spend more time making cool stuff and less time researching how to turn LEDs on and off.
